A loan of $4,000 helped a member to pay for purchasing seeds, fertilizers and for leasing farmland.

Laxmi Self Help Group's story

In 2012, 10 women from a village of Khurda district, Odisha, India stepped out and decided to build a secure future for their family. They formed a group named Laxmi Self Help Group. The members of this group are all women. One of them is Mrs. Carubala, who was selected as their president. The lady sitting second from the right hand side in the photo is Carubala.

Curubala is 49 years old and lives with her husband and her two children. Her husband is a farmer and has been involved in cultivation for a long time. She got the idea of doing paddy cultivation from her husband, so she gathered some other women from her village and told them about her plan. They liked her idea and appreciated her. She took on the leadership of the group and started the cultivation of paddy and sells it in her village. She has very good relationships with her customers as she sells paddy or rice, whichever is required by the customers, on time.

Now she has a new idea, which is to lease more land for cultivation so that she can do paddy cultivation on a larger scale. For this reason, she and her group have requested a loan amount of 250,000 INR to purchase seeds, fertilizers and for leasing farmland.

In this group: Carubala , Jayanti , Basanti , Chinmaye , Diptimaye , Lili , Bidyutprava , Namita , Puspanjali , Bishnupriya
