A loan of $750 helped to buy manure, urea, herbicides and others to protect and maintain her coffee crops.

Maria Xiomara's story

Maria is 31 years old and mother to a one year old son. Together with her husband she works in agriculture, particularly in the planting and cultivation of coffee. It was her parents who taught this activity to her at a young age because in her family it is a means of income, covering different needs such as: clothing, food, medicines with many restrictions, among others. The land that she - together with her husband - cultivates is her own, as she inherited part of it from her parents so that she would be able to work and could have an income. She currently wants to protect and maintain their crops in order to avoid being infected by fungi or by 'la broca' (a type of pest which affects coffee plants) which is a harmful and destructive insect.

Maria has requested funding through the COMIXMUL cooperative in order to buy supplies such as urea, manure, herbicides, fertilizers etc, to protect their coffee harvest. Her plans for the future are to be able to expand her crops by purchasing more land in order to grow more coffee and generate more income for her family and home. She also dreams of giving her son the best education, to see him grow and graduate from university.
