A loan of $725 helped to buy organic manure.

Mario's story

Mario is 43 years old and is divorced. He has two children, who he lives with in his house made from adobe bricks. From a very young age he liked working in the country and was very committed to supporting his family, who had little means and whose main livelihood came from farming.

When he was 19 years old he moved out of the family home and received a piece of land of around 15 acres which he began to cultivate to take care of his new family alongside his wife. However they separated, and since then he has supported the home alone. Today he has 2 hectares full of crops such as organic cocoa, coffee, barbasco plants and fruit trees which he grows with much dedication because it is a job he has always been passionate about. Over the years he has been a farmer he has dealt with different problems such as attacks by pests and adverse weather conditions which posed a risk to his crops. However, through hard work he always managed to counteract these factors and keep caring for his plantations up to the present.

One of his main long-term objectives is to acquire more land to increase his cocoa plantations as it is one of the most profitable products in the area, in the hope that he can increase his income, which will benefit his children. This is his first loan with Kiva and he is grateful for the help he receives to keep going. He also undertakes to make his repayments punctually. On this occasion he would like to borrow 2,000 PEN to buy organic manure.
