Suraiya's Group's story

Suraiya baji is the wife of M.A. G.. She lives in the small city of Kasur,Pakistan, famous for its sweetmeat and shoes. She owns a two room brick house and has been living in it for the last 28 years. Suraiya is the mother of four children: one son and three daughters. Her son works in a cloth factory where he maintains power loom machines. Her first two daughters make decorative embroidered dresses and sell them in the market. Suraiya baji's husband works in a clothing factory and he also takes care of the power loom machines. Suraiya baji is a housewife and also makes thread to order. She is the only woman who is an expert in thread making in her community. She successfully completed her two loans from Asasah (a Pakistan microfinance institute). Now she is applying for a loan to buy a thread making machine which will make her effort less and increase her profit.

Suraiya baji is joined in her loan group by four other members. Rehana baji wants a loan to buy cloth to resell. Azizan baji wants a loan to buy fruits to resell. Bilquis baji wants a loan to buy thread for her embroidery business. Shahnaz baji wants a loan to buy material (thread, cloth) for her embroidery business.

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.
