A loan of $175 helped to buy beehives for honey production.

James's story

James lives on a farm close to Kakamega town, in Kakamega county. Kakamega is located in Western Kenya and is famous for the Kakamega Forest, the only tropical rain forest in Kenya. It is a very good location for beekeeping due to the old growth trees in the forest and the concentration of farms in the area, which provide bees with a variety of forage.

James is married, and has seven children. He and his wife have been farming for twenty years and are currently growing tomatoes, vegetables, maize and sugarcane on their land. He likes beekeeping because it is an income-generating activity, and in the future he hopes to channel some of that income into expanding his land and farming projects.

This is James’ first loan with Kiva and he plans to use the income from his beehives to pay his children’s school fees.
