A loan of $1,075 helped to buy sheets, comforters, pots and pans, etc.

Glady Mercedes's story

The communal bank "30 de Agosto" meets in the parish of Picoaza in the city of Portoviejo. It is a very commercial place known for its traditional Saint Peter and Saint Paul festivities and for the cheerfulness of its people.

This is where Gladys, 43, lives. She is married and has four children, ages 22, 17, 12 and five. The three youngest go to school and her husband is a merchant.

Gladys is a good wife and is requesting the loan to help her husband who is a merchant. He sells all kinds of clothing, sheets, comforters, pots and pans and other products. He travels to different cities in eastern Ecuador where he spends three weeks at a time. Once he sells all his merchandise he returns home to relax for a week and then goes out again. This type of work is very hard on Gladys and the family but it is the only source of income they have. Her husband has been in this business for over 20 years and it has allowed them to get ahead.

This loan will be used to buy sheets, comforters, pots and pans, etc. Gladys has been a member of the communal bank for three loan cycles and she likes the fact that is is able to help her husband this way.

Her goal is to open a shop so her husband will not have to travel any more.
