A loan of $350 helped to buy fertilizer and pesticides.

Román Edilberto's story

Román is 45 years old. He is married and has six children, who are ages nineteen, seventeen, fifteen, fourteen, twelve, and thirteen. They are all in school. Because of the financial situation at the time, since he had twelve siblings, Román only went to school until the fourth grade. After that he went to work with his father.

Román has been a farmer since he was fifteen. He started out working with oxen, carts, and plows. So far he farms 3.5 acres of corn, and dedicates a lot of his time to the land. He travels two kilometers by bicycle every day to get to the place where he farms. He works from 6:30 am to 12:30 pm. And when his children aren't in school they help him at work.

Román has planted 2.6 acres of corn and will use the loan to buy fertilizer and pesticides in order to obtain the best possible harvest.

Román's dream is for his children to finish school, to repair the house where they live, which suffred damages in the 2001 earthquake, and also to purchase a pair of oxen to work the land.
