Hellen's story

Hellen is 34 years old and married with 3 children. She earns her income through the sale of crops and livestock and the monthly compensation she receives as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools. On her land Hellen grows maize, beans, groundnuts, and millet. She also has chickens and sheep.

Hellen has served as a CKW for the last two years and she looks forward to renewing her CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW she will use the materials in her business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of her village, helping them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes.

With the additional money she will earn as a CKW, Hellen plans to expand her saloon business. Her biggest dream in life is own a permanent house for her family.
