A loan of $1,275 helped to buy materials to build a small house.

Mery's story

Mery, 42, lives with her husband, Octavio, and their four children in their own house made of adobe blocks. She grew up in the countryside. Her parents always farmed, growing profitable crops like cacao, coffee, annatto, and palillo, which are the main local products. She has been farming independently for 20 years. With support from her husband, with whom she has the pleasure of working, she has made a great effort to improve their family's well being. Mery likes her work because she is used to farming. However, she has had to face some problems like insect infestations and cacao diseases that many times threaten seasonal production. She often hires local workers to do harder tasks such as weeding and harvesting mature pods.

This is her third loan cycles with Kiva, and she is grateful for the funding to go forward. She also promises to make her payments on time. She has applied for a loan of 2,000 nuevos soles to buy materials to build a small house on her land so that she can tend her crops in the days before harvesting.
