A loan of $1,000 helped buy agricultural inputs for her expanded coffee and plantain crops.

Maria Isabel's story

Maria Isabel, who is 50 years old, is visionary, enterprising, and very combative. She has applied these traits up to the present as a merchant and farmer, cultivating coffee, beans, corn, christophenes, cassava, and orchards of plantains and bananas. She also has a small farmyard with farm fowl for sale. In this way she can generate greater income for her family and contribute to the household economy. Of her 5 children, 4 are married: only one minor child lives with her and her husband and is still involved in his parents' different rural activities. Maria's coffee fields are located some 15 kilometers from her home, requiring her to go by bus.

Maria's goals are to expand her cultivation of coffee and her orchards, cultivating 1 1/2 manzanas of land, in order to obtain a larger and better production of coffee and plantains to sell at competitive prices in the market. In this manner, she will be able to contribute to the household economy, helping her husband with the different household expenses, including food, clothing, medicine, etc., for the wellbeing of her children and family. That's why she is approaching the COMIXMUL cooperative, seeking financing to purchase fertilizers, manure, and insecticides, among other inputs for her project.
