New York Group's story

Pictured here are members of the “New York” group from Waterloo, a small town near Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital city. They are petty-businesspeople who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva, to apply for a loan of 500,000 SLL (Sierra Leone leones) for each in the group. With this loan, they will be able to add more goods to their respective businesses, attract more customers, make more sales and profit and consequently, improve their living conditions. The featured leader of this group of entrepreneurs is Yayeh. Yayeh was born in Portloko 46 years ago. She is married and has five children. Her husband is a trader, and her children are attending primary and secondary schools. Yayeh has been selling dried fish for seven years now. With her share of this loan, she will buy baskets of dried fish to add to her current stock.
