A loan of $300 helped to buy beehives for honey production.

Esther's story

Esther lives in a small community outside of Kwale town, which is in Kwale County. Kwale County is located on the Kenyan coast near the border of Tanzania. While beekeeping has not historically been a major activity in the region, the mangrove swamps closer to the coast and large passion fruit farms inland provide bees with robust sources of nectar. Though most farmers in the area are new to beekeeping, many are very enthusiastic about keeping bees.

Esther is married and has four children. Both she and her husband work as farmers, and they are currently growing mangoes. Esther is excited to start beekeeping because it will be a good source of income for her family.

This is Esther's first loan, and she plans to use the income generated by her beehives to save money for a dairy goat. Esther's hope for the future is to expand her number of beehives to 20.
