Sonia Tamara's story

The “Al Progreso” (To Progress) communal bank meets every fifteen days in Montecristi Canton known for its rich pre-colonial culture and for its crafts that are renown nationally and internationally; it’s where the famous straw hats come from. Sonia, 40, lives here. She’s in a common law relationship and has two children who are 16 and 14 years of age and attending school. Her husband works with her. Sonia and her husband have a home-based restaurant. They prepare dinner there every evening for their customers to enjoy. She prepares different dishes every day to satisfy her customers who increase every day. They’ve been in this same business more than 12 years and it makes it possible for them to get ahead honorably while at the same time take care of their children’s needs. She will use the loan to buy foodstuffs to prepare her dishes. She’s been in the communal bank 7 years and likes it because she’s made many friendships in the bank. Her dream is to provide a good education for her children.
