A loan of $600 helped to buy a dairy cow.

Santos Ernesto's story

Santos, 42, only completed third grade because his parents were poor and he had to learn how to work when still very young. His father would say that learning to work was better than going to school because the latter wasn’t good for anything. He has a spouse who works with him in agriculture and they have two children who are attending school already.

He’s spent his entire life in agriculture since his father taught him the occupation so he has much experience in the work he does. He states that he’s grateful to a large degree to his father for teaching him to work but rues not having attended school. Perhaps he would have better opportunities and higher salary.

His life is hard. He rises at 4:30am, milks the cows while his wife prepares him breakfast and then heads out to his place of work. He walks about 25 minutes to get there and works for six hours and then returns. In the afternoon he works about three hours on a small crop of his own.

The loan will be used to buy a dairy cow. His dream is to be able to buy about 10 dairy cows to have a way to provide schooling for his children so that they won’t grow up to be like him. Also, to buy a piece of land where they can build their own house since the one they live in now belongs to his brother-in-law.
