Marta's story

Marta is 49 years old and hard-working. She lives with two of her four children in her father's house. Marta became a widow four years ago and so become head of the family. Her children love her very much. Marta has a stable job in a local state school, where she works every day and her main income comes from her monthly salary. She uses this salary to pay for her son's further education studies - he is studying in Lima and, Marta says, she "wants to give him the best" she can. However, with many bills to pay, Marta had the idea of starting to sell meals in the town where she works. She works out of a tent which is strategically placed in the school where she works. Marta is well-known as she has been working there for 23 years. Marta's business is going very well and, thanks to her profits, she has an extra income. This is her second loan with Kiva and she is grateful for the financial support being provided, as it helps her to improve her business. For this reason, she promises to make her repayments on time. Marta will invest the 1300 Nuevo Soles in buying supplies to prepare her meals.
