A loan of $4,175 helped a member to buy bridal gowns.

Las Optimistas (Cuenca) Group's story

The communal bank "Las Optimistas" is comprised of eight members who work to improve the economic stability of their homes. They are all good friends and companions. They live in the city of Cuenca, a place which enjoys a cool climate and green fields. It is the birthplace of great poets and athletes, and its people maintain the culture and traditions. One of the members of the group is Gladys who has been involved for two years with the communal bank. She likes the group because all the members are good friends. The loans allow her to improve her family's economic stability. Gladys, 38, is married and has four children, ages 17, 15, 14 and 6. The oldest three are in middle and high school and the youngest in elementary school. Her husband is an auto mechanic and runs his own workshop. The house they live in is their own. Gladys has been selling bridal gowns for 17 years and she also makes a wide variety of clothing and sells cosmetics. She plans to use the loan to buy bridal gowns. Her dream is for her children to become professionals. The small photo is of one of the members who could not be present for the group photo.
