Esperanza Marlene's story

The Chimborazo communal bank meets every fortnight in the Picoaza Parish in the city of Portoviejo. The city is known for it's commerce, it's traditional festivals of San Pedro and San Pablo and for the joy of it's people.

Esperanza lives here. She is 44 years old, married with four children from this relationship. Two are adults and two, aged 7 and 1, study in Secondary School. Three of them still live at home. Her husband is an informal merchant. Esperanza is a great wife, who is taking out this loan for her husband who sells underwear and plastic products. He goes to other cities to offer his products for sale. He works four days a a week, especially on weekends when sales are the best. This work is tiring but at the same time it is the only way he has of making a living and providing for the family. He has been doing this for 15 years which allows his family to carry on. This loan will be used to buy underwear and plastic goods.

Esperanza is a founding member of the communal bank and she likes it as she can use it to obtain loans. Her dream is to buy a cart for her husband to sell from.
