A loan of $3,000 helped to purchase a minibus and start trading in fruits and vegetables.

Avtandil's story

Avtandil is 51 years old. He lives in the small village of Lanchkhuti district with his wife and two sons. His sons go to the local secondary school. His wife is housekeeper.

Avtandil is involved in agricultural activities. In particular, he has cows and a plot of agricultural land, where maize and nut trees are grown. He is very hard-working man and does his best to have a good harvest.

In the region there is a high unemployment rate, but self-employment helps inhabitants to make living. So Avtandil decided to start his own business with a loan, but the local credit providers usually demand experience and some stable income from the borrowers. His credit requests were rejected several times, as he was unable to satisfy their requirements.

Avtandil received the credit he needs in the framework of joint initiative of Kiva and Credo - Startup Program that gives rural poor people the chance to start or re-start businesses. With the loan of US$ 3,000, he will buy a minibus and start trading in fruits and vegetables. He plans to purchase fruits and vegetables at wholesale prices and then resell them at higher prices. This will increase the income of his family.

With increased income, Avtandil will be able to improve the living conditions of his family.
