A loan of $200 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Mercedes's story

Mercedes is 44 and a hard-working woman. She lives with two of her seven children in the house that she first rented 12 years ago. 12 years ago, when she started her family, she began farming her mother-in-law's land an hour away from where she lives. There she grows various crops such as peas, potatoes, olluco and oca (olluco and oca are types of Peruvian root vegetables), which she takes care of each weekend, awaiting the harvest. The other days she does farm work in which she does milking and is paid a monthly salary. This helps her with the household expenses.

For that reason Mercedes wants to improve her harvests, as by selling her crops in the city of Pampas, she gets considerable income. But she wishes to obtain greater income, which she will get through improving the quality of her crops.

This is her second loan with Kiva, and in all this time she has obtained the money necessary to invest in developing her business. Therefore she promises to be on time with her installment payments. Mercedes will use the 500 soles to buy organic fertilizer to spread on her crops.
