A loan of $725 helped a member to purchase firewood.

Soutoura Group's story

The six members of the Soutoura Group are married women with an average age of 40 years and an average of three children. They are living mostly in monogamous families in the Hamdallaye district of Sikasso, the third administrative region of Mali. They are on their twelfth loan with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso, with the goal of meeting the needs of their customers.

Mariam, shown sitting on the far right in the photo, is a merchant of firewood. With her loan, she intends to buy a load of ten tons of firewood. She plans to resell it at retail for cash from her home to a clientele composed of men and women.

Mariam hopes to earn an average monthly income of 20,000 Francs CFA, a portion of which is used to repay her loan and its interest, and the remainder will be added to her savings.
