A loan of $1,150 helped to construct a bio-digester.

Catherine Wanjiru's story

Catherine is a mother of five and a grandmother of three. She lives with two of her daughters who are still in school and the three grandchildren who belong to her late daughter. While her main source of income is from selling second-hand clothes at the local market, she also practices farming. She has two cows from which she gets milk and dung as a source of fuel for cooking. The dung is used together with the firewood to cut down the quantity of charcoal used. Income from her business mostly goes to paying school fees for her daughters and grandchildren in addition to the small salary that her husband gets from his employment at a flower farm, as well as taking care of the family needs. She learnt about biogas from her neighbor who also enjoys using biogas and approached our office for construction. Catherine will be able to save money previously spent on charcoal, kerosene and firewood, while using the dung more efficiently by tapping gas. Time spent on firewood collection will also be saved, enabling her to spend more time at her business and to increase sales. The bio-digester will also help promote a clean environment which is one of our MDGs.
