A loan of $500 helped to obtain a water pump for irrigation.

Jumbo's story

Jumbo, 24, recently completed secondary school and has been irrigating his small farm using buckets for the past three years. He is requesting a Kiva loan so that he can buy a water pump to help him irrigate his crops.

Though he is young, he has experience growing many different crops including tomatoes, onions, fresh maize, sweet potatoes, and a local eggplant called ‘impwa.’ He has gained a lot of farming knowledge through attending training workshops put on by the government and by local NGOs, and he hopes that with a water pump he can see his business expand to new levels.

Water pumps can be a major boost for farmers such as Jumbo, who struggle to irrigate their crops during the dry season. A water pump allows for farmers to water their crops more regularly, while also increasing the area they are able to cultivate. Unfortunately, the upfront costs of such a water pump can be very prohibitive. Once he secures a loan, Jumbo will be able to get a water pump from Rent-to-Own, which will deliver the equipment to his farm, as well as provide training on how to use and maintain it.

Jumbo hopes to be able to one day send his young children to school. He plans to significantly increase his crop production once he has secured a water pump and plans to use the new profits to support his family. It is for this reason he is asking Kiva lenders to assist him with a loan so that he can obtain a water pump as soon as possible.
