A loan of $500 helped to obtain a water pump for irrigation.

Collence's story

Collence is 36 years old and lives in the farming region of Chibombo District, Zambia. As a farmer, Collence has been working hard to put 8 children through school. Collence is requesting a Kiva loan so that he may purchase a water pump to irrigate his fields.

Collence has been selling large quantities of green peppers, tomatoes, and onions to markets in the capital city of Lusaka, and even to buyers from neighboring countries. For the past 15 years, Collence has slowly been expanding his farm, but he has relied on family to help him in the labor-intensive task of watering using buckets. With a pump, Collence and his family will be able to irrigate their crops far more efficiently.

Water pumps can be a major boost for farmers such as Collence, who struggle to irrigate their crops with buckets during the dry season. A water pump allows for farmers to water their crops more regularly, while also increasing the area they are able to cultivate. Unfortunately, the upfront costs of such a water pump can be very prohibitive. Once he secures a loan, Collence will be able to get a water pump from Rent-to-Own, which will deliver the equipment to his farm, as well as provide training on how to use and maintain it.

Collence hopes to use new profits from an expanded farm to continue work on a new house for his family. It is for this reason that he is asking Kiva lenders to assist him with a loan so that he can secure a water pump as soon as possible.
