A loan of $1,600 helped to buy manure, pesticides and herbicides, and to pay for the land to be tilled to cultivate 14,000 square metres of corn. He will also sow 7,000 square metres of grass for pasture.

Leopoldo Antonio's story

Leopoldo is 35 years old. He has a grade 9 education. He has a spouse who tends to the housework. His daughter lives with them, as does one of his brothers.

Leopoldo has worked in agriculture and livestock breeding for approximately 8 years now. He learned these skills from his father, who has been a farmer all his life. He travels 1 km by bicycle from his home to the plot of land he cultivates. He works from 7 am to 11 am and in the afternoons he takes care of his cattle and does other chores.

The loan will help him to buy manure, pesticides and herbicides, and to pay for the land to be tilled to cultivate 14,000 square metres of corn. He will also sow 7,000 square metres of grass for pasture.

Thus, he hopes to ensure that his cattle have food for the next year. He hopes to have a good harvest, of which he will sell a portion to repay the loan and, thereby, continue to keep the door open to future loans. He dreams of improving the infrastructure of his home. Also, with the profit he makes he plans to increase his small herd.

All of these plans, he understands, can only be achieved if he continues to work hard, as he has done thus far.
