A loan of $1,400 helped a member to pay for plowing and to purchase farm inputs, tools, and seeds.

Benkadi 1 Group's story

The ten members of the group "Benkadi 1" are married women, who average 45 years of age and six children each, all living in traditional families in DJIGONSO, in Commune de BOUGOURA, Cercle de BLA, in the 4th administrative region of the Republic of Mali. The women are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their farm work during the rainy season. They are on their fourth loan with the institution. The past loans were indeed paid back.

The crop grown is peanuts, as is the case with RACHELLE, who is sitting first from the left in the photo. With her loan, she intends to purchase some farm inputs, seeds, and tools and to pay for plowing to maintain 1 hectare.

After the harvest, the produce is sold to men and women customers in the village and in YANGASSO. She plans on making an average profit of 130,000 francs CFA at the end of planting. This profit will enable her to pay back the loan and also to help her husband to cover day-to-day expenses.
