A loan of $2,050 helped a member to buy vicuña wool in bulk.

Estrella Azul Group's story

The Communal Bank “Estrella Azul” (Blue Star) is starting it second loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Alto Lima Community Center. This group consists of nine members and is led by a Board of Directors headed by Sra. Benita as its president. The members of this Communal Bank engage in various businesses such as selling eggs, selling foods, weaving blankets, weaving blankets by machine, spinning thread from alpaca wool, producing sportswear, and producing jackets.

This loan will benefit small entrepreneurs such as Sra. Benita. She says that she joined Pro Mujer six months ago after receiving an invitation from a promoter of the organization who visited her at her house. Benita currently has a business of weaving and selling blankets. She gained knowledge about this business from her previous job where she learned her weaving techniques. Afterwards she decided to open her own workshop.

The loan she is receiving now will be used to increase her capital for buying vicuña wool that she will acquire in bulk at the traditional fairs. She will then use the material to make what she sells from her retail space. Working in this manner enables her to generate income to sustain her family. Benita is married and has four children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Benita said that she enjoys the savings, the loans, and the meetings.

In this group: Benita, Olga , Isabel, Fernanda, Seferina, Cristina, Felipa , Rosa Petrona , Juana Julia
