A loan of $900 helped to purchase organic compost.

Bertha's story

Bertha is 38-years old and has two children who live with her in her own home. Her home of the last fifteen years is built of rustic materials. Bertha is a happy woman but also conscientious in her work. For twenty years has planted potatoes, peas and corn. “The produce from my area is good because the plants grow strong and healthy”, says Bertha. But she doesn't solely make her living from farming; she also has animals: cows, pigs and donkeys. The donkeys help with transporting compost and also her harvest. Bertha is thinking about cultivating another parcel of peas, as her future goal is to improve production and sell her produce in other cities. Her goals for the year are clear, which is why she needs to plant more peas and corn. This is what Bertha is requesting the loan for. This is her fourth loan with KIVA, and she feels grateful for the financial help she is receiving to keep moving forward. In addition, Bertha promises to make her payments punctually. Bertha will invest the S/.2500 soles (USD $900) in the purchase of organic compost to nourish her sown fields.
