A loan of $875 helped buy fabric, thread, buttons and other sewing supplies.

Nancy Monserrate's story

The Unión de Mujeres Community Bank meets twice a month in the beautiful town of Calceta, known as "Calceta, a town without equal" because of the beauty of its womenfolk and because, according to its citizens, there is no more beautiful town in the world.

This is where 54-year old Nancy lives. She is married and has four adult children who attend college. Two of them still live with her even though one is already married and lives there with her husband and two little ones. Her husband is a builder.

Sra. Nancy is a dressmaker and works for a woman who pays her a weekly wage. However, at nights Nancy works independently sewing clothing especially little girls' clothes, her favorite. She does make a lot of clothing for women also. Her orders come from private individuals.

Nancy has had her business for more than 27 years and her earnings help her husband pay for household expenses. She will use this new loan to buy fabric, thread, buttons, and other sewing supplies.

Nancy is a founding member of this community bank and likes it for the loans it extends to members. Her dream is to have a workshop of her own.
