He is organizing a communal bank to request a loan that he will use to buy fertilizers. This way, he can fertilize 15 cuerdas (around 3.5 acres) of coffee plants. In the future, he wants to have more land so that he could cultivate more crops to increase his earnings.

The other members of this communal bank also work in agriculture. In the photograph, 11 members appear, but only 8 of them were granted this loan.

El señor Gregorio esta casado, tiene 48 años de edad, no tuvo la oportunidad de estudiar ya que sus padres eran de escaso recursos económicos, tiene 5 hijos y de ellos 1 esta estudiando, se dedica a la siembra de café, inició este negocio comprando una plantas y se dio cuenta que le generaba ganancias, a la fecha lleva 10 años de experiencia, cuenta con el apoyo de su esposa.

Organiza un grupo y solicita un préstamo que lo utilizará para la compra de fertilizante que lo utilizará para abonar sus 15 cuerdas de siembra de café, desea en el futuro contar con mas cantidad de terreno para poder sembrar mas y asi obtener mejores ganancias. Los demás integrantes del grupo se decian a la agricultura. En la fotografía aparecen 11 integrantes, pero, solamente a 8 de ellos se le concedió el préstamo.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
