This group is made up of very committed women who have, since the creation of the Banc Villageois on 25th November 2003, managed to develop a good relationship based on solidarity and helping each other out, on top of building up their income-generating activities, which are principally in the form of small trading activities.

Mariama, who is standing on the far right of the photo and in the inset towards the bottom right, is the star borrower of this group. She is 43 years old, married and mother to a girl and four boys. She is very enthusiastic and attends the weekly markets where she buys and sells palm oil as well as other farmed products.

Her new loan will enable her to buy a fairly substantial quantity of containers of palm oil to resell on a retail basis. With the profits she is planning to improve her family's living conditions.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
