A loan of $1,350 helped to buy fertilizer for use in rice production.

Celestin's story

Celestin is 65 years old. He is a father of five children. He has been farming rice for the past eight years. His wife works with him. He has requested a Kiva loan to buy more fertilizer. He plans to use the profits for reinvesting in rice growing.

The agriculture sector employs 90% of Rwandans. Despite the importance of agriculture to Rwandans, financial institutions view lending to fund agricultural activities as a high-risk proposition because the profitability of these activities is affected by weather, natural disasters, and price fluctuations. Thus, farmers in Rwanda remain underserved by financial institutions. Urwego Opportunity Bank is expanding into this market and is happy to provide Kiva lenders with the opportunity to support Rwandan farmers.
