A loan of $725 helped to pay local workers.

Lucia's story

Lucia, 64, is married to Víctor and has two grown, hardworking children. She lives with her husband in their own house and makes her living mostly by farming. She owns three hectares of land with many cacao plants. She tries to keep them in good condition so that later the cacao pods can dry in the sun, the only way to get the aroma and flavor desired by local buyers who deliver the product to processors. She works with her husband and hires local workers for more difficult chores such as weeding between the furrows, which is part of the crop maintenance.

Lucia thoroughly enjoys her work because she can always be with her family. Over time, she hopes to achieve some other goals, such as setting up a business on the first floor of her house that she could manage on weekends to generate income to supplement her field work. She has applied for a loan of 2000 nuevos soles to pay the workers to do the first weeding of the season.
