Marifat works at a central polyclinic in her city. She is a nurse. Marifat has three sons. The eldest son lives far away from home; he and his family live and work in another country. However, when possible he sends money to Marifat. Marifat's second son works in an in-store bakery.

Marifat turned to MDO Arvand in order to get a loan for repairing the roof of her house. For several years the slate has deteriorated, and after heavy rain the roof started leaking. Currently Marifat would like to carry out repairs.

Marifat very much hopes that she can repair the roof before the winter, but the money she has saved up is not sufficient. To purchase new slate and repair the roof she needs more money. Marifat and her son very much hope that Arvand will help them and support financially.

About MDO Arvand

MDO Arvand is one of the leading microfinance institutions in Tajikistan, offering small loans to entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. This makes an enormous difference in a country, which is not only the poorest in Central Asia, but also home to a population where two-thirds live below the poverty line. Today, Tajikistan's economy literally depends on remittances being sent from family members working abroad in Russia because there are so few local job opportunities.

But Arvand loans have been able to make a difference and change lives. Read about some of the incredible success stories they have seen here in this Kiva blog post: Bringing hope to Tajikistan with Arvand -- one success story at a time.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
