Elizabeth's story

Elizabeth is 60 years old and lives in the town of Puerto Colombia, department of Atlántico, 13 km from the city of Barranquilla and part of the metropolitan area of the city. The Caribbean coast is nearby to the north, so her most important business is tourism. Elizabeth is separated and has 3 children aged 32, 36 and 40. Her businesses are: general store, selling colognes, perfumes, creams and cosmetics through catalogues, and sewing men's and women's clothing. She learnt how to sew from her mother when she was very young and has been making clothes for 30 years. She started selling merchandise more recently on the suggestion of a friend who encouraged her to start this business to generate more income for her family. She buys materials, supplies and merchandise at stores in the city of Barranquilla, by cash or credit. She sells to friends, neighbours and family members by the same payment methods. Her working day is from 8 in the morning until 8 at night. This is her first Kiva loan with the Fundación Santo Domingo and she will use it to buy fabric, thread, lace, perfumes, colognes, creams, cosmetics and accessories. With this investment she hopes to be able to increase her sales and her profits, and put some money into savings. Her medium to long term goal is to finish refurbishing her home and to increase the general store business.
