A loan of $375 helped to buy plant seedlings.

Carmen's story

Carmen, 33, is a single mother living in her own house with her three children who she wants to provide a good education and better quality of life for. Carmen works in agriculture. She rises very early in the morning to head out to her farmland that’s been producing organic cacao beans for 11 years thus being able to support her family economically.

She’s always on top of any expenses her children might generate especially during the school term which is why she’s always watchful of her cacao and coca leaf production. She sells her crops to various merchants who offer her good per kilo profits. With profits earned from her ha rests she’s able to cover her children’s expenses.

She considers her work to be quite self-sacrificing because it’s her only source of income. She always gets support from local laborers with whom she keeps her crops in good condition hoping to produce good condition cacao stalks every so often.

This is her second Kiva loan and she feels grateful for the financial support she gets to continue moving forward. She also commits to make her payments punctually. On this occasion she wants to have 1,000 new soles to buy seedlings to replace some of the cacao plants that have become damaged.
