A loan of $550 helped to buy organic manure.

Teodora's story

Teodora, 51, is a hardworking woman. She lives with her husband, Antonio, with whom she has five children. Only one of the children lives with them in the house she inherited from her parents. Despite her age, she still farms, as she has done from an early age. "I was born, grew up, and will die on the land," she says.

Teodora has owned her land for 30 years and she grows her food--potatoes, olluco, vetch, and beans--in large quantities. She and her husband care for the crops, fertilizing and clearing the weeds that grow in the furrows. Their youngest son helps with the harvest, which they sell in the city of Pampas. “I take my son along to help with the bargaining," she says.

She wants to improve her plantings so that she produces quality crops. This is her second loan cycle with KIVA, and she is grateful for the funding, which lets her get ahead. She promises to make her payments on time. Teodora will use the 1500 soles to buy organic manure for her plantings.
