A loan of $425 helped a member to purchase artisanal jewelry to sell.

Benkadi Group's story

The group BENKADI is composed of four married women, who average 46 years of age and three children each. They live in traditional extended families with their husbands, co-wives, brothers, and sons in the NIEBALA district of Bougouni City. They know one another through ties of community, friendship, and commerce. To bolster their financial capacity for operating their businesses better, they joined the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso and are now on their fourth loan. The three previous ones were correctly paid back.

This group of women does commerce in artisanal jewelry through MARIAM, who is the second woman sitting from the left in the photo. She intends to use her loan to purchase 20 dozen chains and earrings from makers in Bamako. Accepting cash or credit in Bamako and at home, she makes her sales to a customer base composed essentially of women. She envisions making an average monthly profit of 25,000 francs CFA that will be invested in her business and used to pay back the loan.

In this group: Mariam, Maimouna, Korotoumou, Djenebou
