Benkadi Group

The Benkadi group is made up of ten women, who are all married and average 36 years of age with three children each. They live in traditional enlarged families with their husbands, other wives, brothers and sons in the Heremakono Nord district of the town of Bougouni.

They got to know each other as neighbors, friends and through trading. In order to boost their financial capacity and improve their trading businesses, they joined the microfinance institution, Soro Yiriwaso and are on their second loan. The previous loan was repaid in full.

This group of women trade in traditional medecines through Assetou, who is sitting on the far right of the photo. With her loan she is planning to buy a hundred bottles of medicine from manufacturers in Bougouni. She sells her products at the market and from home, on a retail basis, for cash and on credit to a customer base made up principally of women. She is planning to make an average monthly profit of 80,000FCFA, which will be invested in her business and used to repay her loan.

Le groupe BENKADI est constitué de 10 femmes toutes mariées ayant une moyenne d’âge de 36 ans et.3 enfants. Elles vivent dans des familles traditionnelles élargies avec leurs maris, coépouses, frères et fils dans le quartier HEREMAKONO NORD de la ville de Bougouni.
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de voisinage, d’amitié et de commerce. Pour renforcer leur capacité financière afin de mieux faire leur commerce, elles ont adhéré à l’institution de microfinance Soro Yiriwaso avec laquelle elles sont à leur 2éme prêt. Le précédent prêt a été correctement remboursé. Ce groupe de femmes fait le commerce de médicaments traditionnels à travers ASSETOU, elle est la 1ère femme assise de la droite vers la gauche. Elle compte acheter avec son prêt, une centaine de flacons de médicaments avec les fabricants de BOUGOUNI. Elle effectue ses ventes au marché et à domicile, en détail au comptant et à crédit à une clientèle composée essentiellement de femmes.
Elle envisage réaliser un bénéfice mensuel moyen de 80.000FCFA qui sera investi dans les activités et rembourser le prêt.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
