Mary's story

Mary is 31 years old and she did not attend school. She lives and works in Buchanan, the capital city of Grand Bassa County. Buchanan is located by the sea and is well known for its beaches and delicious fish. Many logging companies are also based in the city. Residents of Buchanan love eating fufu, cassava based dough typically eaten with soup or sauce. Most people in the city are Bassa speakers, one of the indigenous languages of Liberia.

Mary is married with five children between 2 and 12 years old, only four of whom are in school and they all live at home. For the past two years, she been selling cold water and charcoal in the local market. She started this business with a little money from her husband and she learned business from her friends. She sells from Monday to Saturday for 9 hours. She is requesting a loan to purchase more water and charcoal for her business. Her plan is to build a house.
