Maria's story

María, 56 years old, is a simple woman. She lives with Marcos, the youngest of her 5 children, in her own home. She was born in the native community where she lives, and where she watched her children being born and raised.

María makes her living in handicrafts. Her parents taught her everything she knows today and that she puts into practice in her community. She receives a lot of tourists throughout the year. This is how her knowledge helps her to earn a living and turn this into a business.

She makes handicrafts with natural products from the area, like coconut bark, the seeds of plants and other products with which she makes beautiful curtains, as well as natural medicines to relieve various illnesses.

She has customers from all over the country who visit her constantly, and also enjoy the landscapes of her community. Now, she wishes to make more handicrafts in order to meet the tourist demand at national and international levels.

This is her first loan with Kiva, and she is grateful for the financial support. She also promises to be punctual with her payments, as with previous loans. María will invest the 2000 soles in the purchase of accessories, as well as threads and tools for making the handicrafts.
