A loan of $1,625 helped to buy organic soil amendments.

Manuela's story

Manuela, 60, is a happy and very shy woman. She lives with her husband, Pedro, with whom she has seven children. They took care of and educated them, but now only her youngest daughter lives with them in their own house.

Her main work focuses on agriculture. She comes from a farming family, so when she was a little girl she learned what was necessary to set up her own fields. When she started her family she began to grow peas, potatoes, beans, and other food products for her household. She says they rented farmland but, little by little, with the help of their savings, they bought pieces of land to add to what they had gotten from their parents. This is how they currently have various plots of land where they grow in quantity.

She says she sells her harvest in a nearby city where she gets a good price for her food and they're able to earn more profits. Now she wants to improve the quality of her crops and save for her old age. She also raises cows; she has seven cows and receives extra money every day from the milk they produce.

This is her first Kiva loan. She's waiting hopefully to be able to improve her income with the financial support. She also promises to make her payments punctually.

Manuela will invest the 4,500 soles [PEN] in organic soil amendments for her fields, because she has a lot of land.
