Nexhmije is married and mother of five children between the ages of 1 and 8 years old. She is a housewife, staying home to care for the children and the house, but sometimes helps her husband sell wood for heating during the wintertime. They live in very poor conditions in the Ashkali community of Kosovo. Her husband earns a living by using his horse to transport and collect both wood and iron, which he then sells in the community.

Nexhmije is now requesting a loan in order to renovate the roof for the horse’s stable. The stable is in need of renovation because it is very old and when it rains the horse and the area become wet and even flooded. Nexhmije’s goal is to add a cow to their stable and then be able to sell the milk and dairy products to add extra income for their family. She wants to thank all lenders for this support!

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.
