María Aurora's story

Maria has been a member of the loan group ‘Flourishing Women’ for 15 years, in which time she has established very good friendships with all of her group members. She lives on the outskirts of Cuenca, which has been a World Cultural Heritage site since December 1999. The city is bathed in four rivers and its gastronomy captivates the palates of those who visit. The people are friendly, polite and hardworking and are always looking to create a better future for their families.

Maria is 68 years old and is a single mother to two adult children who are married and live independently. The house where she lives is the fruit of her work and sacrifice.

Maria works as a street vendor selling traditional dishes such as humitas, tamales, quimbolitos and a great variety of sweets. She developed this skill in order to bring up her children and she has also worked in farming, raising chickens and guinea pigs.

The money she receives from the loan will be invested in the purchase of supplies to make her traditional dishes. Her goal is to continue to expand her business.
