A loan of $1,425 helped a member to pay for farm inputs and plowing for planting crops.

Benkola Group's story

The group "BENKOLA" is composed of six married men averaging 52 years of age and four children each, all living in polygamous families in Cercle de BOUGOUNI (3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The men are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their rainy season farm work. They are on their second loan with the institution. The past loan was indeed paid back.

Corn is the crop grown by DOULAYE, who is standing second from the right in the photo. With his loan, he intends to purchase farm inputs and seeds and to pay for plowing to make use of 1.5 hectares.

After the harvest, the produce is sold to men and women customers in the city of BOUGOUNI. He plans on making a profit of 200,000 francs CFA per planting. The profit will enable him to pay back the loan and help cover the day-to-day expenses of their household.
