Due to difficult circumstances Esi did not have access to any form of formal education, yet this has not stopped her from achieving her dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Currently, Esi prepares and sells ‘Kenkey’ (a traditional Ghanaian staple dish that is made from corn dough and is wrapped in banana leaves) in Emissakrom (near Cape Coast). She has been doing so for about 7 years. As a widow with 4 children, Esi uses all her income to provide for herself and her family. Esi will use the loan to purchase an increased amount of maize, which will aid her in improving her overall ‘Kenkey’ sales. Esi wants to use the future profits from her expanded business to ensure that all her children are able to receive an education.
