A loan of $575 helped a member to buy seeds, fertilizers, herbicide, and small pieces of equipment, and to pay for labor and weeding.

Benkadi V Group's story

The ten members of the Benkadi V group are married women who, on average, are 35 years old and have four children. They live mostly in polygamous families in Massoukou, one of the villages in the Dioila prefecture, Koulikoro, second administrative region of Mali.

The group is collaborating with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso with the goal of being better able to organize their farming at the start of the rainy season. The group grows ground nuts and millet. They are on their fourth loan with the institution.

Sali, the first person on the right in the front row, with her loan, plans to buy farm inputs and small pieces of equipment, and to pay the costs of labor to maintain about a half of a hectare of millet and ground nuts.

After the harvest, the crops are sold in the town of Marka Coungo to men and women customers.

Sali hopes to earn about 110,000 francs CFA per harvest.
