Melquiades is single, does not have any children and lives with his brother. He is from Chapare Province, but came to San Isidro, like many people do, looking for better opportunities in life. In his town, he used to work growing potatoes, but the production decreased due to climate changes, which are difficult to control, and the harvest became more and more scarce. For this reason, he decided to migrate to a more tropical area, where he bought some farmland which is where he works right now growing pineapples. He has 1/2 a hectare (1 1/4 acres) from which he can harvest around 12,800 units which he sells to intermediaries who come to buy from him. He is requesting a credit to pay for the costs of harvesting the pineapples.
