A loan of $1,300 helped to buy clothing, handbags, perfumes, etc.

Gema Dolores's story

The communal bank "El Pedregal" meets every 15 days in El Pedregal, in Picoaza parish in the city of Portoviejo. This is a place that is known for its commercial activity, its traditional San Pedro and San Pablo festivals, and the happiness of its people.

This is where Gema, 21, lives. She is separated, but has a 3 year-old daughter from this relationship. She lives in her parent's house.

Gema is a young woman who likes to be self-sufficient. With her efforts, she is supporting her daughter. She works in retail trade, selling clothing through catalogs, handbags, certain perfumes, and accessories. She sells door-to-door; she goes around the city where she has a lot of customers. She sells on credit and collects every 15 days. Gema's had this business for a year; she started out with the first loan that she received from the institution, for which she is very grateful. This is how she has been supporting herself and her daughter.

Gema will use this loan to buy clothing, handbags, perfumes, and other products to sell. She has been with her communal bank for more than a year, and she likes it because with her first loan, she started her business.

Gema's dream is to provide her daughter with everything she needs.
