Ratna's story

Ratna was born in a small village in Laung, Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan. Ratna is an only child, coming from a family background that is not well off. Her parents do not have decent educations, so she does not have a steady job. Her father only received education up to high school graduation and the mother did not complete primary school. Her parents are small farmers who work on farms owned by others, and their income is not enough, so they are not able to send Ratna to college.

Ratna wants to continue study in college to improve the economic condition of the family. She wants to become an expert in nautical science. Because Indonesia is an archipelagic nation, certainly there are a lot of jobs in the field of nautical science, both for domestic shipping and international shipping. Ratna dreams of becoming a ship captain so she can sail around the world.

Ratna wants to continue her study at the Academy of Maritime Nusantara Cilacap, Department of Nautical science. Ratna choose AMN because her parents could not afford college. Once she becomes an expert in nautical science, she can get a job in Indonesia or in a foreign company. Ratna wants to achieve her dreams without burdening her parents. The Student Loan Program from Kiva will establish high expectations for Ratna, because then she can go to college and someday be able to achieve her goals.
