A loan of $1,325 helped a member to cover the cost of plowing and weeding, and to buy farm inputs, seeds and tools.

Benkadi V Group's story

The ten members of the Benkadi V group are married women who are, on average, 37 years old with three children each. They all live in traditional families in Tionsso, one of the villages of the Cercle of Koutiala (third administrative region of Mali).

They have joined the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to successfully carry out their farming activities during the rainy season.

They are on their fourth loan with the institution and have duly repaid their previous loans.

Chitan Salif, a member of the group, is a rice farmer. In the photo, she is in the standing row, second from the right.

She plans to use her loan to buy farm inputs, seeds, small tools, and to cover the cost of plowing to cultivate one hectare (2.47 acres) of land.

After the harvest, she will sell her production to both men and women, in her village and in Koutiala.

She is expecting to make a profit of 85,000 CFA francs at the end of the growing season. This profit will allow her to repay her loan and to help her husband with the daily expenses.
